JUNIOR RUGBY - SARACENS GIRLS

NEWS

Claire gets U14 call

Claire Shutler of Saracens has been selected to attend the CBs' School of Rugby from September - the only Hertfordshire U14 girl to be selected, and one of only three from East Region.

Only 28 girls from across the country have been selected - so this is a truly elite group and Claire deserves every congratulation for getting in and "flying the flag" for Hertfordshire and Saracens.

Well done Claire!

End of Season Awards

Congratulations to Billy for her award of "Players' Player of the Year". It
was well deserved for somebody who has completely changed over the course of
the season. We started with somebody new to rugby and not too sure about it,
and finished with a positive confident player who has introduced more girls
to the squad and welcomes in all the new players.

The "Most Improved Player" award was very keenly contested this year, as all
the girls have developed their rugby skills over the season. The eventual
winner was Megan C. A shy girl who has exploded into matches this year and
deservedly won a place in the East Region squad based on these performances.

Regional Squad for Royal Sun Alliance Festival at Rugby School. Congratulations to Claire and Alice on their selection for the final East Squad for the RSA tournament on 6th May. Hopefully the East will be able to go one better than last year.

The U17's played their final game of the season against Westcliffe.
Unfortunately only Amanda, Flo, Kiera, Billy and Orla could make it, with
Amy acting as manager. Westcliffe lent us two players and a game of 7's
took place. Good practice for the local and national events in May. Many
thanks to Paul Gear from the U15 boys for stepping in and refereeing the
game, and Westcliffe for coming over and making a day of it.

The U14's played Welwyn, with both sides having 11 players. Anna from
Westcliffe and Sydnie from Tabard making up our numbers. Alice F and Sarah
made their debuts for the U14 team. It was always going to be a tough game
with the heat and hard pitch adding to the problems Welwyn would cause.
Saracens were stronger at the ruck and were able to turn the ball over a
number of times to their advantage, while Welwyn were able to tie Saracens
ball up in the maul and turn ball over here. Neither team wanted to kick for
touch and so kept the ball alive all the time. Both Defences tackled hard
and Saracens just edged the first half 3 tries to 1. This was due to good
support play and off loading the ball. The first try came from a break by
Anna, with Alice F in support collecting the pass and out-pacing the Welwyn
cover to score from 40m. The second try followed a Saracens drive up field
being stopped 5m from the line, Saracens rucked over and gave Claire the
space to dart round the side to score. The third try came from a break by
Alice N. who was stopped by Courtney just short of the line, Melissa backing
up was able to pick up the ball and score. Claire converted two tries.
Courtney replied with the Welwyn try. In the second half Alice F, Megan and
Alice N, all scored and Claire converted all three while Welwyn scored
through Rachel and Jo and converted one. Final score Saracens U14 40 Welwyn
U14 17.
